Testing Information

TYPES OF TESTS:

  • GED:  The General Development Test (GED) for a High School Equivalency Diploma is administered through the Counseling and Testing Department.  Testing dates are established on a yearly basis and a reservation is required.  To schedule an appointment call Carolyn Burnett 423/585-6804.   There is a $65 fee for testing and $11.00 re-test fee for each retest administered.  A practice GED test is available at: http://www.gedpractice.com.

 

  • COMPASS:  The COMPASS placement test is designed for degree seeking students and students seeking admission to other selected programs.  The assessment is based on previous college records of ACT scores results and to anyone who holds a GED certificate.  For more specific assessment questions, please call the Director of Testing, John Russell, at 423/585-6806.  Testing dates are established on a yearly basis and a reservation is required.  To schedule an appointment call the Counseling Office secretary.   There is no fee for testing.   • ACT Residual Testing:  The American College Testing Residual examination (ACT) is for students who have applied, been admitted or are enrolled at Walters State Community College and are unable to attend a national test date. Resulting scores will be reported to and used solely by WSCC. In order to take the Residual ACT, you must not have taken the examination during the past sixty (60) days prior to testing. To schedule an appointment call the Counseling Office at 423/585-6806. A fee of forty dollars ($40.00) will be charged for testing.

    Students eligible for Tennessee Lottery Scholarship monies must have national ACT scores. Walters State Community College does not administer the national ACT. For national ACT testing sites, dates and other information, go to: www.act.org

 

  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP): The CLEP program is a computer-based testing program designed to offer Walters State Community College students an opportunity to receive college credit in thirty-four (34) general education courses. There is a one hundred and two dollar ($102.00) fee required for each test administered to students. Contact the Office of Counseling and Testing at 423/585-6806 for additional information.   • Regents On-Line Degree Program (RODP): The RODP program is a Tennessee Board of Regents program designed to offer students an opportunity to complete academic coursework through the Internet system. Walters State Community College's Counseling and Testing office provides testing proctors for students enrolled in the RODP program. Students needing a testing proctor must contact the Counseling and Testing office to schedule a testing proctor (423/585-6800).

 

  • Exit Examination for Graduates: Graduating associate degree students are required to register for and complete the MAPP—The Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress

    The Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP) test is a measure of college-level reading, mathematics, writing, and critical thinking in the context of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The MAPP test is designed for colleges and universities to assess their general education outcomes, so they may improve the quality of instruction and learning. It focuses on the academic skills developed through general education courses, rather than on the knowledge acquired about the subjects taught in these courses.

    The Exit Exam (MAPP) is a graduation requirement.

  • EVOLVE EXAM:
    Beginning the fall of 2008 academic term, Walters State Community College is one of the Tennessee Board of Regents institutions participating in the RODP on-line Associate of Applied Science Registered Nurse program. Information about the program is available at http://www.regentsdegrees.org/assn.eligibility.htm. One step in participating in that program is the completion of the EVOLVE Pre-Assessment testing battery. Students interested in sitting for the EVOLVE examination need only contact Walters State Community College Counseling and Testing Center to register. The EVOLVE examination assesses the following areas: math, English, science and personality.
