Basketball Opens Season In Style

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. -- The Walters State Senators opened their season in rousing fashion Wednesday night by routing the visiting Milligan JV Buffaloes 101-49 at 'Z' Buda Gymnasium in Morristown.
 
Freshman Fred Sturdivant (Chattanooga, Tenn.) began his college career with a 19-point performance. The Chattanooga Brainerd product added five rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and a pair of assists to lead the Senators attack.
 
Fellow freshman Tahj Wells (Antioch, Tenn.) added 16 points and seven rebounds along with four assists, and sophomore John Holleman (Petersburg, Va.) poured in 11 points and grabbed four boards in the win.
 
Freshmen Desmond Crisp (Bolivar, Tenn.) and Darius Randolph (Roanoke, Va.) added nine points each, and freshman Zach Zabowski (Knoxville, Tenn.) grabbed eight rebounds for the Senators. Walters State held a 54-28 advantage on the boards.
 
The Senators shot 51.8 percent (44 of 85) in the contest, including a blistering clip of 60.5 percent (23 of 38) in the second half. Walters State forced 20 turnovers in the win and turned those miscues into 19 points on the other end of the floor.
 
Theo Collingsworth and Terian Sitton led the Buffaloes with 12 points each in the defeat.
 
The Senators will return to action at 'Z' Buda Gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 9, when they host the Clinton (S.C.) Golden Bears. The tipoff is set for 8 p.m., immediately f
