OTA Students Plan CarFit Check

Walters State Occupational Therapy Assistant students will make sure your driver’s seat is in the right form during a CarFit event on April 25 from noon-2 p.m. on the Morristown Campus.

CarFit is an educational program designed to help older drivers find out how well they fit in their personal vehicle. A proper fit in a personal vehicle can greatly increase driving safety and comfort.

“This event is designed to increase driver safety,” said John Pruett, OTA instructor, said. “Students will focus on your seat, steering wheels and mirrors. Students can also offer pointers in getting into and out of the car.”

This event also gives the college’s OTA students an additional certification upon graduation.

“Since driving is a significant part of daily for many, occupational therapy assistants play a big role in helping patients recover those skills if need through rehabilitation,” Pruett said.

Occupational therapy assistants help patients of all ages develop, recover and improve skills needed for daily life. The college offers an associate of applied science in occupational therapy assistant. Graduates are ready to enter the workforce in an in-demand field.

There is no charge to attend the event and meet with an OTA student. This event is sponsored by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Sessions will last about five minutes and those participating do not have to get out of their cars. Reservations are not needed.
