The Walters State Debate team wrapped up a very successful 2016-17 season with another tournament championship at East Tennessee State University's Parli Plunder Debate Tournament.
In an all Walters State final round, Jake Muscari debated without a partner but still earned the victory over Joshua Hendricks and Graham Christophel. In addition to finishing as the second place team in the open/varsity division, Christophel was honored as the tournament's second-place speaker while Hendricks placed third.
"I am very excited about our success this year against teams from the finest colleges and universities in our state and region, but I am just as excited that we again set an all-time school record with 25 different students debating in at least one tournament," said Robert E. Pratt, II, debate coach and instructor of speech communications at Walters State.
"Our students are the keys to our success here. While we will miss the stellar leadership of debate president Joshua Hendricks who graduates this spring, we expect returning debaters and new recruits to step up as leaders next fall," Pratt also said.
The Walters State debate team is open to all students. Students can enroll in a three-hour debate class for credit or join the team without taking the class. For more information, contact Pratt at 423-585-6952 or Robert.Pratt@ws.edu.
