Debate Team Ends Season with Back-to-Back Wins
May 21, 2018

The Walters State Debate Team finished the year with successful back-to-back competitions at Northeast State Community College and East Tennessee State University.

The varsity team of Graham Christophel and Eve Winstead, both of Morristown, advanced to the final round at ETSU’s Parli Plunder Debate in April. Elizabeth Brotherton of Morristown and Bethany Mizell of Jefferson County finished third overall in the novice field. Anastasia Ortiz earned a fifth place individual novice speaker award, becoming the first student from the Sevier County Campus to earn an award since the college started offering a debate class and practice there in the fall.

Brotherton and Mizell continued their success at Northeast State’s Spring Fling Debate tournament the following week. The pair received a semi-finalist award and picked up second and third-place individual speaking awards.

“It was a very good year for us in terms of winning awards, but we are most proud that a school-record 29 different students debated for us in at least one intercollegiate tournament this season,” said Robert E. Pratt II, instructor of speech and debate coach.

The Walters State Debate Team is taking the summer off but will begin competing again in the fall. The team is open to all degree-seeking students.
