Walters Alumna Honored as McNair Scholar
June 1, 2017

Like many students, Jessica Chambers didn’t know what she would do in life when she enrolled at Walters State. Now, she’s making plans for graduate school in clinical psychology.
Chambers graduated from Walters State with an associate degree in psychology in 2016. For her, the degree represents much more than colleges essays and late night study sessions.
“When I came to Walters State, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I had thought about engineering, and I did well in engineering classes. Once I had a psychology class, I knew that I could make a big difference in that field. That became my passion,” Chambers recalled.
“I made so many connections, and my professors encouraged me to be my best.”
Chambers is now reaping the benefits of her hard work. She was chosen as a Midway Scholar at East Tennessee State University. This prestigious program for transfer students pays for tuition and provides funds for research or travel. This summer, she is also a McNair Scholar. The program is named for Dr. Ronald E. McNair, an astronaut killed in the Challenger explosion in 1986. It is designed to help students prepare and gain admittance into graduate school.
“Jessica was an honors student coming out of our program and is an excellent example of how our transfer students do very well at four-year universities. In a short time, she has become a top student at ETSU and these scholarships provide the opportunity for her to become a scientist and a practitioner,” said Dr. Chris Baker, professor of sociology at Walters State.
Even though Chambers attended a year before Tennessee Promise, she still attended for free. Her tuition and expenses were paid by a Tennessee Hope Lottery Scholarship and a Walters State Academic Scholarship.
