The EU Climate Deal | DW Documentary
The EU Climate Deal | DW Documentary
UN climate experts say our future is threatened by rising global temperatures. We
are already experiencing more heat waves, forest fires and flooding. The Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says it is crucial to take immediate action to reduce
greenhouse gases. The European Union aims to reduce CO2 emissions and become carbon
neutral by 2050, using the Green Deal as its road map. The German government has already
agreed to more ambitious climate targets. By 2030, it aims to cut carbon emissions
by 65 percent compared to 1990 levels. As the EU’s largest industrial nation and its
biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, Germany could be a trailblazer for the rest of
Europe. The German economy faces massive restructuring. Could Germany soon be carbon
neutral? Or are the climate targets just a load of hot air?

Visiting North Korea | DW Documentary
Visiting North Korea | DW Documentary
Few tourists manage to peek behind the iron curtain of North Korea’s dictatorship.
But the journalist Luca Faccio managed to visit Kim Jong Un’s regime. Anyone venturing
behind the world’s last Iron Curtain into North Korea will experience a very different
country to the one we know only through the usual images of rocket launches and mass
rallies. The country is ruled by the dictator Kim Jong Un, whom the people worship
– or are made to worship – as a god-like father figure. Little is known about daily
life in North Korea, because all images that reach the outside world have been censored
by the government. Visitors rarely see evidence of oppression, enforced conformity
and starvation in the rural population. Still, journalist Luca Faccio is able to offer
some interesting insights into the isolated country – although, of course, government
watchdogs are on his heels everywhere he goes. (posted in 2017)

Amazon Empire: The Rise and Reign of Jeff Bezos (2020)
A sobering look at the behemoth online retailer that has become too big to fail. The
documentary pulls back the curtain on the questionable inner workings of Amazon and
how the company deployed bellicose tactics to eliminate its competition. Amazon Empire
lays bare how the retailer went from one of the largest online booksellers to becoming
a one-stop online sales giant using an unheard-of cult-like allegiance to the customer
is always right’ business model. The film also examines how Amazon’s constant analysis
of its customer’s buying habits is raising queries into privacy issues. What filmmakers
convey is how Amazon has ingrained itself into the consumer psyche and the impact
it’s had on other online and physical retailers. The PBS program utilizes interviews
with company insider’s past and present to lend insight into Amazon’s daunting expansion
of power.
