Join "Word Up" for Annual Poetry Slam
November 14, 2017

Walters State Community College invites you to its Slam Poetry Contest. The contest is sponsored by Word Up, the college’s English Club. The evening starts at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 in the lobby of the Judge William H. Inman. Admission is free and winners will leave with some nice prizes.
Slam poetry is performance poetry, according to Sherri Jacobs, associate professor of English and advisor to Word Up. She said some might act out words or mix beats or jazz with the words.
Poetry does not have to be original, but original work will gain extra points in the judging process. The event is open to everyone, so please make sure the poetry chosen is appropriate for all audiences regarding language and themes.
Performances are limited to 10 minutes, but most only last two or three minutes.  Those planning to perform are asked arrive by 5:30 p.m. to allow time for registration.
For more information, contact Jacobs at 423-585-6965.
