"Heathers the Musical" Opens April 13
April 6, 2018

Break out your croquet mallets and your shoulder pads. Walters State Community College is bringing “Heathers the Musical” to the stage in April.

The play is, like the cult-classic movie, a dark comedy that pays homage to the 1980s and the ultimate mean girls. Whereas the original is all dialogue, the play has added some great song and dance numbers.
“We have some very strong singers and this musical certainly showcases that talent,” said TJ Kent, instructor of theatre and director of the play.

“That’s one of the reasons the play was chosen as the spring production. The musical always tops the list when he asks students what play they would like to perform.”
While the Walters State Music and Drama Department is no stranger to dark comedies – a recent production of “Sweeney Todd” drew rave reviews – the subject matter covered in “Heathers the Musical” may be very close to issues confronting the college’s students and other young people in the area.
“Here, we’re dealing with suicide, bullying, harassment and violence. This play brings up a lot of difficult issues,” says Kent. “The play also has a really good message as things are resolved at the end.”
Counselors from the college’s counseling and testing office will available after every performance in case audience members want to discuss how some of the issues are or have affected them.
“While it has dark moments, the play is a comedy and features some very funny moments,” Kent added.
“Heathers the Musical” is written by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe and based on the film written by Daniel Waters. This production contains strong language, sexual situations, violence, and adult content. This is recommended for mature audiences only.
Show times are April 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 15 and 22 at 2:30 p.m. A question and answer session with the cast and crew will immediately follow the production on April 13 and 20.

Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students. The box office opens an hour before each show. You can make reservations by calling 423-585-6922 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
