Debate Team Shines at Carson-Newman Tournament
December 16, 2019

The Walters State Debate Team wrapped up its fall semester schedule by winning more awards against some of the nation’s most prestigious debate programs at the Tennessee Porch Swing Debate Tournament held at Carson-Newman University.

Dustin King of Kodak and Billy Cosner of Seymour advanced to quarter-finals in the novice field that also featured teams from the University of Alabama, Marian University in Indianapolis, and several regional powers such as Bryan College, Covenant College and the host school, Carson-Newman. Sevierville’s Colin Wyvill tied for sixth among novice speakers.

“This was a great weekend for our young team, and the continued success of our Sevier County-based debaters shows how much incredible work assistant coach Tim Howell is doing on his campus,” said Robert E. Pratt, II, an assistant professor of communication who serves as the college’s debate team.

Walters State's Debate Team Plans to compete in four tournaments during spring semester. For information on joining the debate team, contact Pratt at
