Team Reaches Semi-Finals at State Tournament
March 10, 2020

The Walters State Debate Team brought home multiple awards from the Tennessee Intercollegiate Forensics Association annual tournament, held Feb. 22.
Christopher Cox and James Hicks, both from Morristown, were 3-1 in preliminary rounds, losing to Bryan College in the semi-finals. Hicks was named fourth among all novice speakers.
“The state tournament is a serious test of progress, and even in this rebuilding year, our largely freshman team saw results after working hard to prepare,” said Robert E. Pratt, II, assistant professor of communication and coach of the debate team coach.

“We were one of only two two-year colleges in the field this year. That means we also learned a great deal from the mostly four-year college and university debaters we competed against.”
Walters State has two more tournaments this semester. will debate twice more this spring. The team plans to travel to Northeast State and East Tennessee State University in March and April.
Students interested in becoming a part of debate at Walters State should contact Pratt at Robert.Pratt@ws.edu. No prior debate experience is necessary.
