Interested in Tennessee Reconnect? This Is For You
December 19, 2017

While Tennessee Reconnect doesn’t begin until fall 2018, Walters State Community College is offering a head start to adult learners planning to take advantage of the new scholarship program.
Free workshops will enable students to brush up on reading, writing and mathematics and provide the chance to earn some college credit before Tennessee Reconnect begins. The workshops are free and are offered at all four campuses.

“We want to help students get ready for college. Students also have the opportunity to earn some college credit. By offering these classes now, before Tennessee Reconnect begins, we hope to give our adult students the best possible chance for success,” said Melissa Duff, dean of the Student Success Center at Walters State.

Tennessee Reconnect is similar to Tennessee Promise, which guarantees Tennessee residents graduating from high school two years at a community college without tuition. Tennessee Reconnect is for adult learners, which generally includes those 24 and older. Parents, married couples, veterans and other special circumstances may also qualify a student as an adult learner. Tennessee Reconnect is a last-dollar scholarship, which means it pays any remaining tuition after other financial aid sources like Pell Grants have been applied.
Spring workshops will cover the content in learning support reading, learning support English and learning support math. An end-of-the-course test will determine if the student needs to enroll in learning support courses. Most students who took the courses in the fall were able to test out of these basic skills classes.
“People who are nervous about coming back to school are often worried about these skills, especially mathematics. These workshops help alleviate those fears,” Duff said.
The workshops will also cover information in The College Experience, a course designed to show students the habits that make for college success. The class introduces students to different learning styles, campus technology and campus resources. Most students who attended the workshops in the fall were also able to pass an end-of-course exam and earn college credit for the course.
To be eligible for Tennessee Reconnect, individuals must have been a Tennessee resident for a year. Tennessee Reconnect students must complete the FAFSA for fall 2018 and be deemed an independent student. Students must take at least six credit hours each semester at an approved institution and participate in an advising program. Tennessee Reconnect students must not have previously earned an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
Workshops are being offered on all four campuses, although the workshops may vary. Please note that the date and time of the mandatory orientation class as you register.
