Literacy Conference Focuses on Collaboration
August 8, 2019

“Celebrating Literacy: Collaboration in Action” is the 10th Annual East Tennessee Literacy Conference, hosted by Walters State on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Attendees will leave with “take it to the classroom” advice from
nationally known speakers.
The conference is sponsored by Walters State, the Mossy Creek Literacy Council and the Mid-East Tennessee Regional P-16 Council. The cost of the conference is $100, which includes a light breakfast, lunch, a vendor section and a certificate for 6.0 PDP hours. The conference is held on the Morristown Campus.
The keynote speaker this year is Dr. Stephanie Harvey. Wiley Blevins is a guest speaker.
Harvey is a former reading teacher who now serves as a literacy consultant to school systems. She specializes in comprehension, inquiry-based learning, nonfiction literacy and content area reading and writing. Her books include “Comprehension and Collaboration and “The Comprehension Toolkit.”
Blevins is a former elementary school instructor who studied elementary education as a graduate student at Harvard. He is currently an editorial specialist for early reading at Scholastic, Inc. His books include “Phonemic Awareness Activities for Early Reading Success,” “Phonics from A to Z” and “Navigating Nonfiction.”
Break-out sessions are smaller, topic-driven interactive discussions with experts. These will be taught by Debbie Dadey, author of the popular children’s book series “Mermaid Tales;” Dr. David Freeman, who specializes in effective education for emerging bilingual students; Dr. Derek Voiles, assistant principle of Lincoln Heights Middle School and 2017 Tennessee Teacher of the Year; Allan Wolf, two-time winner of the North Carolina Young Adult Book Award and master of poetry slam; and Susan Price, instructional coach at Dandridge Elementary and a Read to Be Ready Coach for the state of Tennessee.

Blevins will also be presenting a breakout session.
Space is limited and in recent years the conference has drawn over 250 teachers. To register or for more information, contact Tammy Wells at or 423-585-6899.
