Walters State Ranks High in Wallet Hub Survey
August 22, 2019

Walters State Community College placed high in this year’s Wallet Hub annual survey of community colleges, and Tennessee came in at No. 10 on a listing of the best state-wide systems in the country.
The financial advice website placed Walters State as the top community college in the state and the 44th best community in the nation. The survey compared 700 community colleges across 19 indicators of cost and quality.
“This reflects the great work being done by our faculty and staff to keep student success at the forefront of everything we do,” said Dr. Tony Miksa, president of Walters State.
The survey concentrated on three key areas: cost and financing, education outcomes and career outcomes. Within those areas, Wallet Hub considered cost, retention rate, graduation rate, student-faculty ratio, median post-graduate salary, and the available of grants and scholarships.

The top college is State Technical College of Missouri with 70.09 points. Walters State scored 61.97.
“Thanks to community colleges, higher education is more accessible than ever. Some states make community colleges even more accessible than usual. Such initiatives are proving to be more critical than ever, with college tuition increases outpacing inflation and the need for post-secondary training in most jobs projected to grow through 2020. Community colleges will be able to help meet that demand,” Wallet Hub said in releasing the report.
The report also praised top community colleges for offering more flexible schedules, smaller class sizes and rigorous coursework. The full report is available at
