Austin Awarded Scholarship
September 16, 2020

Stephanie Austin, director and assistant profesor of Walters State’s Surgical Technology Program, has received a scholarship from the field’s accrediting agency.

The Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting awarded Austin the Chris Keegan Scholarship. Keegan was an educator, program director and volunteer with the ARC/STSA. The scholarship is given in her memory.

Austin decided to become a surgical technologist after being comforted by one before and after her own surgery. Her first job in the field was at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

She joined the faculty at Walters State in 2017. She holds an A.A.S. from Roane State Community College, and B.A.S. and M.A. degrees from Siena Heights University.

Under her guidance, Walters State’s program became a stand-alone program and received initial accreditation status from the ARC/STSA. Previously, Walters State and Roane State offered the program as a consortium.

The program is now offered on the Sevier County Campus.

Austin currently serves on the board of directors of the Tennessee Association of Surgical Technologists.
