Noncredit Classes Coming to Newport Center

Walters State Community College will offer nine noncredit classes at the Walters State Newport Center, located in the historic Tanner Building in Newport. Many classes can also be taken over Zoom.

• Introduction to Electrical Troubleshooting – March 1-April 19 (Mondays), 5-8 p.m.
Learn how to troubleshoot common electrical problems, including AC and DC circuits, basic circuit components, digital multimeter and basic measurements, input and output devices, and generators and transformers. The cost is $495.

• Introduction to Computers, Windows 10 – March 2, 1-4 p.m. or 5-8 p.m. or March 23, 1-4 p.m. or 5-8 p.m.
Learn about desktop features, the start menu, file explorer. Also covers basics of Microsoft Outlook and basic Microsoft Excel. This class can be taken over Zoom. The cost is $159.

• Essential Skills of Leadership – March 4, 8 a.m.-noon)
Learn how to manage a team by enhancing the self-esteem of team members, solve problems by focusing on behavior and encourage the participation of each member. This class can also be taken by Zoom. The cost is $149.

• OSHA 10-Hour Construction Training – March 10-11, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 
This covers construction industry safety and health standards and is designed for construction workers and others covered by OSHA 29CFS 1926. Included is an introduction to OSHA, OSHA Focus Four Hazards, personal protective and lifesaving equipment, health hazards in construction, power and hand tools, and scaffolds, stairways and ladders. The cost is $249 per person.

• Office Sampler: Word and Excel – March 17-31 (Wednesdays), 5-8 p.m.
Learn how to effectively use Microsoft Excel and Word. Excel topics include using basic spreadsheets, formatting and editing tools and working with formulas, functions and graphs. In Word, learn how to edit and move text, change text formatting, margins and tabs, and organize and print documents. This class can be attended via Zoom. The cost is $195.

• Customer Service Professional Level 1 – March 22, Online and Self-Paced
This course gives individuals across all job titles the core skills need to satisfy customers of all types, including internal and external customers. This class covers six modules stressing the importance of customer services, handling complaints and angry customers, and using customer service as a strategic marketing tool. This classes uses the popular “Through the Customer’s Eyes” training. After successful completion of the course, students will earn the Certified Customer Service Professional (CCSP) from the International Customer Service Professional Association. The cost is $495. Students receive a discount if registering for Level 1 and Level 2 (see below.)

• Customer Service Professional, Level 2 – March 29, Online and Self-Paced
This builds on Level 1 with a focus on sales, communications and phone skills. The class covers using the internet as a tool and using exploratory questions to identify customer needs. Students are taught to discover and strengthen their “voice image” for a great first impression. The cost is $495. For information on the discount for taking both levels, contact Hendrix.

• Microsoft Excel, Level 1 – March 25, 9-4 p.m.
Get the most from this popular spreadsheet and accounting program. Learn to create, save and print Excel documents, explore formatting tips and tricks, create formulas, enter functions and more. This class also covers the differences between Microsoft Excel 16 and previous versions. This may be taken via Zoom and the cost is $150.
