Walters State Named Military Friendly College
March 1, 2021

Walters State Community College has been named a Military Friendly Community College for 2021-22. The honor comes from a ranking of community colleges by VIQTORY Media, publishers of “G.I. Jobs.”

“I am proud of every award the college receives, but this one is unique,” said Dr. Tony Miksa, president of Walters State.

“Our faculty and staff work hard to make sure students who have served this country get the best experience possible at Walters State. This award is a direct reflection of that commitment.

“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we know that many veterans returning from Vietnam were among our first students. We are grateful that so many American heroes chose to begin the next chapter of their lives here at Walters State,” Miksa said.

Miksa thanked Jason Wilder, veterans service coordinator, for the individual attention he provides to veterans. Wilder joined the college in 2019 and served as a machine gunner in the United States Marines.

“Walters State is committed to seeing our student veterans meet their academic goal. The college offers so many free resources and I always encourage veterans to take advantage of those resources,” Wilder said.

The college has also been recognized as a VETS Campus by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

Final rankings were determined by an assessment of the school’s ability to meet important thresholds including retention, graduation, job placement and cost.
