Train For A Healthcare Career In Months

Four career programs will begin this spring and summer through the Walters State Division of Workforce Training. Through these classes, students may train for careers as clinical medical technicians, certified nursing assistants, phlebotomy technicians, and registered dental assistants. Programs range from 10 weeks to five months, with most meeting two times a week. Several classes are offered at a discounted rate.
No prerequisites are required.

Clinical Medical Technician – $3,000 (reg. $4,000), 140 hours
Students are trained to assist physicians by preparing patients for exam and treatment, and performing routine lab functions. Students also learn routine diagnostic testing, the cardiac life cycle, pharmacology, taking and documenting vital signs, and the ethics and legal standards in a medical office. Students review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, and professional workplace behavior. 
SEVIER COUNTY CAMPUS: Aug. 14-Jan. 29, Mondays and Thursdays, 5:30-9 p.m.

Certified Nursing Aide – $899, 128.5 hours
Graduates of this course are eligible to become licensed certified nursing aides in Tennessee. Students learn how to assist patients with meals and movement, take and document vital signs, assist with personal hygiene and report symptoms that may indicate illness. This course includes classroom lecture, classroom skills lab and 35 hours of supervised patient care in a long-term care facility.
MORRISTOWN CAMPUS: April 25-July 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-9 p.m.
SEVIER COUNTY CAMPUS: May 22-Aug. 14, Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
HANCOCK COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL: July 17-Oct. 3, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-10 p.m.

Phlebotomy Technician – $1,500 (reg. $2,000), 70 hours
Graduates of this course will be able to collect blood specimens from patients for laboratory testing. Students learn through 10 weeks of classroom and skill training. Those completing 40 successful venipuncture sticks in a clinical setting are eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association certification exam.
NEWPORT CENTER: May 16-Aug. 1, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-9 p.m.NISWONGER CAMPUS: July 11-Sept. 14, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-9:30 p.m.

Registered Dental Assistant, $2,250 (reg. $3,000), 120 hours
This course is approved by the Tennessee Board of Dentistry. After successful completion of the course, students may register with the state. This course covers all aspects of dentistry including, anatomy and physiology, tooth morphology; infection control and restorative dentistry, and radiology. Students will be required to provide verification and documentation of 30 additional hours of observation at a dental office.  
SEVIER COUNTY CAMPUS: May 2-Sept. 19, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m.
NISWONGER CAMPUS: June 5-Nov. 30, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m.
