New Student Advising

After being admitted to Walters State, remember to activate your MyWS account and check regularly.  You will receive a MyWS alert when it is time to complete online New Student Orientation.  After completing online Orientation, you will be contacted by your academic advisor to schedule an advising appointment. During a New Student Advising appointment, advisors will:

• Help you decide the best path or major to complete your goals
• Review your program of study and explain the prerequisites
• Support you in developing an academic plan and choosing courses
• Connect you to Walters State’s student support services
• Assist you in reviewing your MyWS alerts and admissions requirements
• Guide you in registering for first-semester courses

Continuing Student Advising

Students will be notified in their MyWS alerts when to schedule an advising appointment for the upcoming semester. Registration opens the first Monday in November for spring semesters and the first Monday in April for Summer/Fall semesters. Students must be advised each semester in order to register for classes. During the advising appointment, advisors will:

• Discuss your academic history
• Review your Degree Works and program of study
• Discuss transfer opportunities
• Connect you to student support services
• Assist you in reviewing your MyWS alerts
• Guide you in creating a schedule and registering for courses for the upcoming semester
