Award Based on Academic Achievement, Community Service and Leadership

Five Walters State students have been named Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship.

Honored students are Elijah Dunn, an English major from Talbott; Connor Shelton, a mechanical engineering major from Rogersville; Mia Kathalynas, a mathematics major from Rogersville; Keira Kirby, an engineering major from Sevierville; and Mia Kelly, an art education major from Newport.

“This is the first time we have had five students receive this honor,” said Dr. Saul Reyes, president of Walters State. “With only 200 awards given nationally, these students rank among the best in the country. I congratulate them on this honor, and I commend our dedicated faculty members who work diligently to guide each of our students to the highest possible academic level.”

Students are selected based on academic achievement, community service, and leadership experience. The program is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for community college students.

The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new PTK members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in PTK programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. More than 600 applications were received.
