Practice Your Poetry for Word Up's Slam
November 18, 2025

Annual Event Returns Nov. 24
Slam some poetry with Walters State’s Word Up, the English Club.
The 16th annual Word Up Poetry Slam will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, in the
lobby of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex on the Morristown Campus. Community
members are welcome to join students for the slam.
“A poetry slam brings poetry to life,” said Sheri Mahoney Jacobs, associate professor
of English and advisor to Word Up. “It’s not just reading words on a page. It’s sharing
the meaning of the poem through actions.”
Jacobs adds that the event features a coffeehouse atmosphere with an open microphone.
Come to perform or just come to listen.
The top three finishers will win gift cards. Judging is based on performance, originality
and spoken work poetry.
Those planning to perform should arrive 15 minutes early to register. There is no
charge for admission or to perform. Coffee and cookies will be available.
