Before Your First Class, Do These Five Things

Maybe you've been checking your schedule every day for a month. Maybe you haven't looked at it since you registered.
Either way, a few minutes now can save you a scramble on the first day of class. Before the semester starts, knock out these five things.
Check Your Schedule – and Log In To Elearn
Pull up your class schedule one more time. Check the days, times, campus, class format, building and room number for every course.
Then make sure you can get into eLearn, Walters State's class-management system. That's where you'll find course content, assignments, due dates and messages from your professors. Note: Your classes won’t show up until Aug. 24.
Know Where You're Going
Once you know where your classes are, take a look at the Walters State campus maps and figure out how you'll get there (including where you plan to park).
If you're unfamiliar with your campus, consider visiting before classes begin or give yourself some extra time during the first few days.
Parking lots are busier during the opening week, and the spot closest to your building may not be available. A little extra time means you can park, find your building, and walk into class without starting the semester in a sprint.
Know What's Available to Help You
You don't have to wait until you're struggling to use Walters State's student resources.
Free tutoring and personal and academic counseling are available to students, and Walters State's libraries offer resources on each campus, including free equipment checkout options.
And if you're not sure where to start, ask Senators Central.
Check the Important Dates
The first day of class isn't the only date worth putting on your calendar.
Take a few minutes to review the academic calendar and important financial aid dates. Knowing deadlines ahead of time is much easier than discovering one after it has passed.
Save the dates that matter to you or put them in your phone now.
Check Your Balance — Then Keep Checking Your Messages
Before classes begin, make sure your balance is paid or that you've set up a deferred payment plan. If you're expecting financial aid, keep an eye on the Alerts section of MyWS in case additional information is needed.
And don't stop checking once classes begin. Make a habit of watching your MyWS alerts and Senators mail throughout the semester. That's where important information and updates will be found.
The Actual Rule
None of this takes very long. But those few minutes before the semester begins can make your first few days a whole lot easier.
Check your schedule. Know where you're going. Know where to get help. Know your deadlines. Check your messages.
