Writing Lab

About the Writing Lab

The English Department's Writing Lab is committed to providing courteous, prompt, and knowledgeable service to all Walters State students who express a need or desire to improve their writing abilities and become more independent learners. The lab, located in Room 120 of the Inman Humanities Complex, provides one-on-one tutorial services to students who are involved in any writing-related activity. Trained peer tutors and a Lab Technician assist with research, reading, writing, or reviewing.

Tutors do not simply proofread or edit students' work, but instead offer suggestions, advice, perspectives, and positive support intended to help students improve their skills and learn to edit their own work. Therefore, each tutoring session is a participatory process in which dialogue leads to greater understanding. We believe that students' writing is their responsibility and that students are accountable for determining the soundness and applicability of any advice and/or recommendations we offer.

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is available to all students enrolled in Walters State Community College courses. While tutors do not proofread, we will be glad to offer comments and recommendations. To receive online writing help, please attach your composition (preferably in MS Word or rich text format) to a brief e-mail message that gives your name, the title of the course, and the name of your instructor or professor. Although not required, assignment directions and your indication of any specific questions or concerns can help us better focus our comments. If working within eLearn, send to "ewlab"; if working outside eLearn, submit to englishwritinglabFREEWS.

Any writing you submit will be retrieved by the lab technician weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., August 15 to June 15, except when the college is closed or when the technician is away from the office. While we make every effort to address your concerns as soon as possible, please allow up to 24 hours from the time we are able to retrieve your submission for a response. Drafts sent the last afternoon of the workweek may not receive a reply until the following week. Also note that commentary we send may be copied to the instructor. If you are unable to transmit your writing or if you do not hear from us within the specified time, please call or e-mail.

Students on campus can also find writing help in Room 120 of the Inman Humanities Complex. Call 423.585.6970 to make an appointment, or just drop by. The lab is usually open from 8:00 to 4:30 Monday through Friday. This schedule, however, may change as warranted, so call or e-mail to confirm open hours.
