Honors Program

The Honors Program at Walters State provides students with opportunities to gain the highest level of academic challenge and quality leadership from dedicated faculty who share a commitment to excellence in teaching and service.

The program is designed for students who have an outstanding academic record, who are academically motivated and desire an intellectual challenge. Students who are accepted into the Honors Program will take select honors courses.  These courses are a part of any major available at the college.   Students also participate in an honors seminar for three semesters.  The Tennessee Board of Regents has approved this program as a "bona fide honors program"; therefore, out-of-state students formally accepted into the honors program will be eligible for the waiving of out-of-state tuition.

Graduates who complete 18 credit hours of Honors coursework will receive an Honors designation on their WSCC diploma.

Acceptance To The Honors Program

To apply for admission to the program, a student must have an ACT composite score of 24 (scores must be less than 3 years old) or SAT equivalent composite.

Students who are 21 years of age or older without an ACT composite score of 24 or SAT equivalent may submit a score of 77 or above on the writing portion, 83 or above on the reading portion, and and a 50 or above on the algebra portion of the Computer Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) in place of the ACT/SAT.

Continuing students may apply for admission after one or more semesters of enrollment at Walters State. Continuing student applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in 12 or more college-level hours.

Transfer students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in 12 or more transferable college-level hours or an ACT/SAT composite score of 24 (score must be less than 3 years old) may also apply.

Retention Requirements

To maintain good standing in the program, Honors students must earn Honors course credit each semester, successfully complete a total of 18 honors credits, and maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average per year without earning lower than a 2.8 GPA in any one term. Grades are monitored after each term.
