Emphasis: Health Information Management

The Health Information Management program prepares individuals with an associate of applied science degree who meet entry-to-practice competencies for health data and information management. This includes HIPAA and regulatory compliance, electronic health records and use of advanced digital applications (AI); management of clinical, financial, administrative, and statistical data; coding medical records and apply reimbursement methods for filing insurance claims; perform quality improvement processes; operational management and leadership for the HIM Department. 

Graduates of this program will be prepared for a variety of positions in the health information services market. The program is designed to offer a wide variety of learning experiences including online instruction, use of computers and software designed for Health Information Management, and directed clinical practice in various medical settings.

Admission Retention and Graduation Requirements

Any student desiring to pursue an associate of applied science degree in Health Information Management must:

1.  Apply, meet admission requirements and be accepted by WSCC.

2.  Indicate Health Information Management as the desired major on WSCC Application form.

3.  See an advisor from the Health Information Management Programs department or division of Health Programs and obtain clearance to register.

4.  In addition, admission into an allied health program requires the following:

(a)  a completed physical health form;

(b)  evidence of malpractice liability insurance;

(c)  a signed and dated acknowledgement of the Drug/Alcohol Abuse Policy and Consent forms. The physical health form, malpractice insurance, and Tennessee Professional Assistance fees are at the student's expense.

(d)  immunization and test requirements include: hepatitis B, MMR, varicella (chicken pox), annual flu vaccine, TDAP within 10 years, and 2-step TB skin test.

5.  Each student enrolled in the Health Information Management program will be monitored, advised and counseled. Complete all required developmental education courses. Students' grades will be evaluated at the end of each semester by the director of the program. A student must maintain the following standards or be dismissed from the program:

(a)  a grade of "C" or better in each course;

(b)  complete designated prerequisite/corequisite courses.

6.  Program graduation requirements include the successful completion of courses in the program with a minimum grade of "C" in each course.

7.  Successful completion of BIOL 2010/2011, BIOL 2020/2021, and MATH 1530 is a prerequisite to HIMT 2307.
