Domino Ensemble To Perform Thursday
March 2, 2022
Walters State Community College welcomes the Domino Ensemble to the Morristown Campus
on Thursday, March 3 for a unique musical experience. “New Music from el rio de la
Plata” begins at 7:30 p.m. in the theatre of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities
Complex. The concert is free and open to the public.
Students will receive a yellow ticket for attendance.
The Domino Ensemble travels a path between jazz, tango, free improvisation and electronic
music. Audience members may be reminded of old jazz records during part of the concert,
while exposed to surprising contrasts and effects at another moment. The group will
be performing from its most recent releases, “Drunken Raccoon” and “Purple Ego.”
The ensemble features four musicians: Jorge Variego (reeds and compositions), Jon
Hamar (double bass), Keith Brown (drums) and bandoneonist Matías Pedrana. Variego
is the founding director. A native of Argentina, he is a former Fulbright scholar
and teaches music theory and composition at the University of Tennessee.
Brown is a professor of music at the University of Tennessee, where he teaches applied
drum set and is director of jazz bands. He performs regularly with several groups
including the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra. Hammer is also a music faculty member at the
University of Tennessee. He plays double bass for multiple groups. Pedrana is an in-demand
musician known for his talent on the bandoneon, a member of the concertina family
common in South American music. He was born in Argentina and is now based in Amsterdam.
The concert is sponsored by the college’s Department of Music and Theatre and Global
Connections, the college’s international learning initiative.
