Veterans, Adult Learners Invited To Education Fair

Adult Learners and veterans are invited to a college education fair at Walters State
Community College on April 14. The drop-in event will be 3-7 p.m. in front of the
R. Jack Fishman Library on the Morristown Campus. In case of rain, it will be moved
inside the library.
Prospective students can learn more about Tennessee Reconnect, a grant that makes
it possible for many adult learners (those 24 and up) to attend tuition-free. To qualify,
students are required to have lived in the state for a year, enroll for at six hours
(two classes) per semester; be seeking a degree or certificate; and complete the Free
Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).
Tennessee Reconnect is designed for adult learners in the same way that Tennessee
Promise is designed for recent high school graduates. Adult learners are generally
24 and older.
Melynda Honaker is using Tennessee Reconnect to earn a business degree. She graduates
in May.
“Tennessee Reconnect takes so much of the financial burden from students,” Honaker
said. “I started taking two classes and, before I knew it, I was thinking about graduation.
I am looking forward to seeing how my life changes after college. I hope to use my
skills to help others, maybe at a nonprofit organization. I want to help others. With
a degree, it’s no longer just about a paycheck.”
Honaker learned about Tennessee Reconnect while researching Tennessee Promise for
her daughter.
“At this event, we want to let adult learners and veterans know what we offer,” Jason
Wilder, coordinator of veterans services at the college, said.
“We can also talk about funding resources that help many of our students pay for college.”
The computer lab will be available for students who want to complete a free application
for admissions to Walters State. Students can also learn about veteran’s educational
benefits and financial that may be available through state and federal sources. Those
attending will also be able to make an appointment for assistance in completing the
FAFSA.
