Cyber Defense Degree Offered
John Breeden and Lois Blais have created an associate of applied science degree in cyber defense in response to area employer needs.

New AAS Degree Offers Cyber Defense Training

Beginning this fall, Walters State students will be able to complete an associate of applied science degree in cyber defense, learning the foundational skills needed to enter one of the fastest growing areas of computer information technology.
Graduates will be prepared to protect data, software, and equipment by detecting and removing both internal and external threats.
“Cybersecurity is a national priority and an issue for all industries,” said Lois Blais, head of computer information technology and associate professor of computer and information technology. “Skills learned in this program will give our students access to high-paying, in-demand careers.”
In this two-year program, students may earn the CompTIA A+ and the CISCO Certified Support Technician certifications with the possibility of others being added.
Classes in networking, programming, cloud computing and the Linus operating system are taken during the first year. Second year classes focus on database concepts, network security, information assurance, and digital forensics. Students are required to complete a capstone project engaging a real-world cyber threat.
“Digital forensics is a new class that combines critical thinking with hands-on training,” Blais said. “Students learn what computer actions are classified as crimes, how to preserve evidence and how to work with law enforcement.”
Students also learn how to spot weaknesses in a system before outside individuals can take advantage of those.
“This field is great for those who enjoy working with technology and enjoy problem solving,” Blais said. “This environment is ever changing with new threats developing daily. So, a commitment to lifelong learning is a must for those entering the field.”
This degree program qualifies for financial aid and may be taken tuition-free through Tennessee Promise for recent high school graduates and Tennessee Reconnect for adults 23 and older who do not have a degree.
Walters State also offers associate of applied science degrees with concentrations in networking, programming and cloud computing.
