Division of Workforce Training Releases July Schedule
The Walters State Division of Workforce Training will offer four noncredit classes in July: Welding Level 1, Certified Supervisor, Industrial Electricity and PLC Troubleshooting and Supervisor 101. WALTERS STATE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS EXPO CENTER
• Welding Level 1 – Stick Welding, July 8-Aug. 5, Tuesdays, 4-8 p.m., $379
In the class, students will learn shop practices, equipment, materials and skills
related to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick) welding. This process is widely used
in construction, maintenance and repair. Skills can easily be applied to other welding
processes. This class places an emphasis on understanding process variables and developing
basic skills. All hands-on exercises are self-paced. This course will benefit those
wanting to learn welding basic skills and experienced welders wanting to improve skills
or learn the Stick process.
MORRISTOWN CAMPUS
• Certified Supervisor – July 8-Sept. 30, 1-5 p.m., Tuesdays, $1,500
This course is the result of a comprehensive analysis of the needs of management professionals
at all levels. Information covered during this class will assist supervisors in working
more efficiently and effectively with the people and the process of an organization.
Content areas include setting objectives, leading, organizing, quality control, problem
solving and ethical decision making. Students will also learn more about managing
groups and teams, staffing, training and appraising performance with sections devoted
to customer service, communications, accounting and finance.
NISWONGER CAMPUS
• Industrial Electricity & PLC Troubleshooting and Programming; July 10-Oct. 2, 5-8
p.m., Thursdays, $1,995.
This course provides an overview of AC/DC electrical concepts with an emphasis on
troubleshooting concepts using schematics and measuring devices. The class also introduces
programmable logic controllers, associated input and output devices, and uploading
and downloading programs. Those attending will learn how to monitor PLC programs,
how to use PLC programming software as a troubleshooting tool and control system maintenance.
• Supervisor 101, July 23-30 (Wednesdays), 9 a.m.-5 p.m., $399.
This comprehensive two-day workshop agenda is focused on essential responsibilities
of a supervisor. This class is appropriate for current supervisors and for employees
seeking to be promoted. This class ensures that supervisors are grounded in fundamentals
and are ready to make a positive impact on their staff and on their organization.
This covers five critical skills: communications, guiding the work, leading the workforce,
coaching employee performance and continuing development as a supervisor. Students
leave with templates and checklists that will make it easy to put new knowledge into
action.
