Ramirez First Walters State Student to Receive Honor
Walters State sophomore Karina Mesa Ramirez has been named a Coca-Cola Global Leaders
of Promise Scholar. She is the first Walters State student to receive this honor and
is one of 220 scholars nationwide.
Ramirez, a pre-imaging sciences major, lives in Sevier County and takes classes at
both the Morristown Campus and the Sevier County Campus.
“Karina is an outstanding student and a leader in our campus and community,” said
Dr. Saul Reyes, president of Walters State. “I congratulate her on receiving this
prestigious scholarship and look forward to seeing her succeed in the future.”
The award comes with a scholarship funded through the Coca-Cola Scholarship Foundation
and the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the international honor
society for community college students.
The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members
defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars
are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in programs and are selected
based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. More
than 600 applications were received.
