Student First to Receive PTK Chime Workforce Scholarship

Walters State student Kelly Hornberger, a paralegal studies major from Morristown, has received the Chime Workforce Scholarship from the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for community college students.

The Chime Workforce Scholarship recognizes high-achieving college students who are enrolled in a certificate or associate degree program that focuses on workforce readiness after graduation. Hornberger is the first Walters State student and one of only 200 students nationwide to receive this honor.

“Kelly is an outstanding student, and I am proud to see her hard work and success recognized with this scholarship,” said Dr. Saul Reyes, president of Walters State. “While she works a full-time job, Kelly is involved with many campus activities and is committed to academic excellence.”

Hornberger works at Cherokee Health Systems. She serves as president of Phi Theta Kappa and vice president of the college’s student government association.

“At the Chime Scholars Foundation, we believe that career and technical education opens doors to financial progress and long-term opportunity. We’re proud to support students who are working hard to gain in-demand skills and build better futures for themselves and their families,” said Jeni Izuel, president of the Chime Scholars Foundation.
