$1.2 Million in Giving, Hundreds of Students Helped
August 19, 2026
As Walters State Community College begins a new academic year, the college is looking back on a strong year of generosity — and what that support made possible for students across East Tennessee.
During fiscal year 2026, the Walters State Foundation received 872 gifts totaling more than $1.2 million. Those gifts supported scholarships, emergency assistance, and other opportunities designed to help students stay on track and reach their educational goals.
More Than $667,000 Awarded in Scholarships
The Foundation awarded scholarships to 591 students during the year, distributing $667,043 in scholarship support.
Five new named scholarships were also created, including the Conner-Townsend Endowment and the Hannah C. Hunter Memorial Nursing Scholarship, extending that support to future students as well.
“Every gift represents someone choosing to invest in our students and in the future of this region,” said Chris Cates, vice president for college advancement and external affairs. “We are incredibly grateful to our donors. Their generosity helps students stay in school, earn a credential and ultimately take that knowledge and talent back into the communities we serve.
Emergency Relief Fund Raises More Than $255,000
The college’s Emergency Relief Fund also saw significant support, receiving 166 gifts totaling $255,019 during fiscal year 2026.
The fund helps students facing unexpected financial challenges that could otherwise interrupt their education.
Giving That Stays Close to Home
The impact of that support reaches beyond campus. The majority of Walters State graduates remain in the area, making support for students a direct investment in the communities where they will live, work and serve.
For Cates, the numbers reflect more than a successful fundraising year.
“These numbers show the role donors can play in helping students move from enrollment to graduation and into the region’s workforce,” he said.
