January 7, 2025
Ham Radio Classes Planned for Morristown, Niswonger Campuses
Youth 17 and under can take Walters State's Amateur HAM Radio Technician class for
free. For those 18 and over, the cost is $45.
This course is designed for individuals who are interested in obtaining an entry-level
amateur radio license through the FCC. Youth and adults are welcome as indicated.
The last session will be a review. Students may then take the exam which has a $15
fee.
The use of amateur HAM radios has regained popular in the last decade as this is only
communication format that is consistently able to reach areas following natural disasters.
The radios may also be used to follow weather balloons as they travel around the earth.
Classes will be taught by Steven Bible, who has held a license and taught HAM radio
for over 40 years, and John Ellenberg, who has been active on HAM radios for over
65 years.
Students must be at least eight years old to participate, with students under 16 requiring
a parent or guardian to be present. No special equipment is required. This class is
considered a STEM-related class as it develops technical capabilities, problem-solving
skills and provides hands-on learning opportunities.
