The use of amateur HAM radios has regained popular in the last decade as this is only communication format that is consistently able to reach areas following natural disasters. The radios may also be used to follow weather balloons as they travel around the earth.

Ham Radio Classes Planned for Morristown, Niswonger Campuses

Youth 17 and under can take Walters State's Amateur HAM Radio Technician class for free. For those 18 and over, the cost is $45. 

This course is designed for individuals who are interested in obtaining an entry-level amateur radio license through the FCC. Youth and adults are welcome as indicated. The last session will be a review. Students may then take the exam which has a $15 fee.

Classes will be taught by Steven Bible, who has held a license and taught HAM radio for over 40 years, and John Ellenberg, who has been active on HAM radios for over 65 years.

Students must be at least eight years old to participate, with students under 16 requiring a parent or guardian to be present. No special equipment is required. This class is considered a STEM-related class as it develops technical capabilities, problem-solving skills and provides hands-on learning opportunities. 

• NISWONGER CAMPUS: class begins Jan. 14 ends Feb. 8 with six sessions between meeting 6-8 p.m. 
• MORRISTOWN CAMPUS: class begins Jan. 27 and ends Feb. 25 with 10 sessions between meeting 5-7 p.m.
