Student Named Coca Cola Silver Scholar
Walters State Community College sophomore Karina Laureano Ruiz, a pre-dental
hygiene major from Morristown, has been named a Coca Cola Academic Team Silver Scholar.
Ruiz is one of 50 students nationwide to receive this honor. This honor includes
a $1,250 scholarship from the Coca Cola Scholars Foundation. The award is sponsored
by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for community college students.
“Karina has distinguished herself through scholarship, leadership and service
to the college,” said Dr. Tony Miksa, president of Walters State. “I congratulate
Karina on this honor and wish her the best as she transfers to complete her bachelor’s
degree.”
While a student, Ruiz served as vice president of fellowship for the Walters
State PTK chapter and served as a student tutor for anatomy and physiology. She is
employed at Wal-Mart. Her education at Walters State has been funded by a Tennessee
Promise and Tennessee Hope Lottery Scholarship. She will earn her associate of science
in May.
“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial
assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins,
President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi
Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational
goals and support tomorrow’s global community leaders.”
