OTA Students Are Ready to Help You!
Occupational Therapy Assistant students will walk senior drivers through a 12-point checklist to insure the driver's seat is in the optimal place for comfort and safety.

Does Your Driver's Seat Fit?

Walters State Occupational Therapy Program is hosting a CarFit Event from 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday, April 23, on the Morristown Campus. CarFit offers seniors a free opportunity to check how their driver’s seats “fit” them.

“Our students are prepared to help aging drivers make adjustments to their vehicles so that driving can be safer and more comfortable,” said Courtney Boren, director of the program.

Trained students will take drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicle, recommending minor adjustments to make their seats fit better.  An occupational therapist will also be on hand to provide information to seniors on how to maintain and strengthen their driving health. Drivers should come to the parking lot located next to the R. Jack Fishman Library.

By 2030, there will be an estimated 58.9 million people aged 65 and older -that's one in five people, or one in four licensed drivers. Personal mobility is critical for healthy aging, but as our bodies change as we age, ill-fitting vehicles can make it uncomfortable and unsafe to drive. Additionally, due to fragility, older drivers have the highest crash death rate per mile of everyone except teenagers. CarFit is a tool that can work to help keep seniors safer behind the wheel.

Walters State’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Program combines academic learning with fieldwork, preparing graduates to design and implement therapeutic plans under the guidance of an occupational therapist. Graduates are eligible to take the NBCOT exam, paving the way for a rewarding career in occupational therapy.
