Adventurers. We hike. We bike. We crawl into caves, climb rocks, snowboard, shoot each other with paintballs, paddle rapids, and eat s’mores. And you are invited to join us!

Here’s how it works. Check out our slate of adventures planned for this semester. See one that you like and hit that register now button and say, “I’m IN!”. Once you’re on the trip list, we’ll reply, “LET’S DO THIS!”.

Adventure Schedule

Cataloochee Ski Trip

Cataloochee Ski Trip

Date: Friday, February 13, 2026
Depart: 7:30 AM
Return: 7:00 PM
Trip Fee: None
Additional Costs: Students are responsible for covering all food costs.

Trip Overview:

Kick-off spring semester with the Adventurers, as we head to Cataloochee for a day of fun in the snow! Located at an elevation of 5,400 feet, Cataloochee offers 18 slopes and trails with a vertical drop of 740 feet. It is particularly well-suited for beginners and intermediate riders.

This trip is open to ALL skill levels. The trip includes your lift ticket (4 hr), equipment rental, helmet rental, and a one ski/snowboard lesson.

Students are responsible for all food costs. Food can be purchased at the restaurant in the lodge on-site. Students are also responsible for bringing winter clothing to wear on the slopes.

Spelunking at Worley's Cave

Date: Friday, March 6, 2026
Depart: 10:00 AM

Trip Overview:

Back by popular demand - join us as we hike, crawl, climb, slide, roll, and wiggle our way through Worley’s Cave. This Tennessee cave is known for its voluminous size with rooms more than 75 feet wide and 250 feet long with high ceilings that often exceed 100 feet. It is noted for its beautiful formations within its miles of passages.

We will explore rooms like the Hobbit's Hallway, the Fairy's Ballroom, Tombstone, Giant's Causeway, Thin Floor Room, the Hall of Masks, base camp, and the Bermuda Triangle.

You will get wet on this adventure! This trip involves hiking, climbing (bouldering-style), crawling, and wading through knee-to-thigh-deep creek water, so general physical fitness is advised. No previous caving experience required. This is a great trip for anyone curious about caving!

Walters State will provide helmets, headlamps, and guide services through the cave. Students are responsible for all food costs.

Underground Kayaking

Flooded Mine Kayak Trip & Battleship Rock Hike

Date: Saturday, March 28, 2026
Depart: 8:00 AM
Return: 9:00 PM
Trip Fee: None
Additional Costs: Students are responsible for covering all food costs.

Trip Overview:

The Adventurers will head up to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky for a day of fun. First, we’ll hit up The Gorge Underground, which provides a unique subterranean adventure where you can paddle through a 100-year-old flooded limestone mine. The guided tour offers a tranquil, wind-free environment suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced paddlers.

From there, we’ll go on a short hike up to Battleship Rock, featuring stunning views over the gorge. The hike is 2.7 miles round-trip.

And finally, we’ll cap off the day with a trip to Miguel’s Pizza! Students will need to bring money to cover food costs. But trust us, it’s worth it.

Walters State Hikers

Big South Fork Hike

Trip Overview:

The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area protects over 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau across Tennessee and Kentucky. It is renowned for its rugged landscape, featuring deep sandstone gorges, towering bluffs, and one of the highest concentrations of natural arches in the eastern United States.

We'll be taking on Slave Falls Loop, which is a moderate, 4.2-mile trail in Big South Fork known for its high "scenery-to-effort" ratio. The path winds through a lush hemlock forest, leading to the 60-foot Slave Falls, which is most impressive after recent rainfall.
