Soccer Pioneer Childress To Speak On March 21

Walters State Community College will host Marilyn Childress, a Vietnam veteran and
a pioneer in women’s sports, to celebrate March as Women’s History Month. This event
is free and open to the public.
Marilyn Childress will speak at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21. Women’s soccer was
a relatively new sport in the United States when Marilyn Childress led the charge
to have the national team added to the Olympics in 1996. She has been heavily involved
in growing women’s sports during the last 25 years. She is also a Vietnam Veteran,
having served as a U.S. Navy corpsman. Childress is vice president of the Veterans
Council of East Tennessee and volunteers for many causes supporting veterans.
This event be held in the Lyceum of the Dr. Wade B. McCamey College Center on the
Morristown Campus.
