“Kids College 2.0: Dive-In Experience” is making its debut on the Walters State Morristown Campus June 3-6 and the Newport Center July 8-11. These camps give young students a week of hands-on learning varied subjects including medicine, animal care, art and technology. Both camps welcome fifth through eighth graders. The Morristown Campus will also host a camp for students in grades three through five.

Camps meet from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. daily with lunch provided. The cost is $120.

“Our goal in this camp is to educate, entertain and provide unique learning experiences,” said Dr. Nicole Cardwell-Hampton, director of youth programs at Walters State. “The programs actually resemble college courses, giving younger students the chance to experience higher education and interact with professors.”

Cardwell-Hampton said the program also introduces campers to broad career areas, giving students a glimpse into what a future career might be.

During the first day, students learn about zoology, biology and veterinary medicine through interactive workshops. Students will examine animals with the assistance of instructors.

The second day will feature the world of medicine, with students learning about health care careers, taking vital signs, blood typing and suturing. Students will also learn basic first aid and CPR.

Students will also enjoy artistic adventures, including through three-dimensional drawing using special techniques while incorporating shading and shadows. Students will also learn animation drawing skills.

Technology and engineering will be the focus of the final day. Robotics and computers will be included with students given hands-on opportunities including coding. Students will also learn about engineering careers and educational pathways.

Kids College is sponsored by the college’s Division of Workforce Training. Registration is online and can be completed here: https://www.campusce.net/walters/course/course.aspx?catId=79. For more information, contact Cardwell-Hampton at 423-585-6756 or Nicole%20Cardwell-HamptonFREEWS.
