Sophomore Accepted By Disney College Program

A Walters State sophomore will spend spring semester in the happiest place on earth.

Sofia Gullion, has been accepted by the Walt Disney World College Program. She applied for the program in September and received her acceptance information in November. Around 20% of the college students who apply are selected for the unique internship.

“I have always loved Disney and I have always wanted to work at Disney World,” Gullion said. “I submitted my application in September. My professors and advisors at Walters State were very helpful in planning for this semester at Disney.”

Gullion will move to Orlando this month and be there through June 12. She doesn’t know exactly what her job will be. Disney Interns are placed in fields ranging from agriculture to zoology. Some work at theme parks while others work at resorts.

“Being an elementary education major, I obviously hope my job deals with children,” Gullion said. “I really would love to be involved in the children’s activities held at various resorts. I am sure I will learn and gain new experience in my role.”

While she’s at Disney, Gullion will still be a Walters State student. She’ll be taking two classes online needed to complete her Associate of Science in Teaching degree in May. She then plans to transfer to the University of Tennessee for fall semester.

Gullion has made the trip to Disney several times with her family. While her parents are happy for her new  experience, her younger siblings cried when they first learned that she’ll be away.

“Leaving my family and friends will be the hardest part,” Gullion said. “I have been in the concert choir here and I am a Senators Page. I felt bad about leaving both a person short, but everyone has been so positive and supportive.”

She does plan to enjoy her surroundings when she’s not working. She’s a fan of all things Disney, but her favorites are Winnie the Pooh, Princess Tiana and the Little Mermaid. Her favorite Disney movie is “Up.”

A much-quoted line from that movie is “Adventure is out there. Go find it.” That’s what Gullion intends to do.
