More Than Halfway There: 5 Things to Do Before the Semester Ends

October 29, 2026

Health commencement at Walters State.

You made it past midterms.

Maybe you’re feeling pretty good about where you stand. Maybe there’s a grade you’d rather not look at again. Or maybe the semester got complicated somewhere between work, family, classes and everything else.

Either way, there’s still time.

Here are five things worth doing now.

Figure out where you actually stand

Check your grades. Look for missing assignments. Take a look at what’s coming between now and finals.

If there’s a class that isn’t going the way you hoped, don’t avoid it. Knowing where you stand gives you time to decide what to do next.

Ask for help before you think you need it

Struggling with a class? Ask about tutoring.

Not sure what kind of help you need? Start with Senators Central. You don’t need to figure out whether you have an advising problem, a financial aid problem or something else before you ask. Tell them what’s going on, and they’ll help you figure out the next step.

Call 423-585-2600 or email senatorscentralFREEWS.

Talk to your instructor

That question you’ve been meaning to ask?

Ask it.

Your instructors can’t help with a problem they don’t know about.

Think about next semester

Finishing this semester matters. So does what comes next.

Talk with your advisor about your academic plan and the classes you need. Don’t wait until the last minute to start thinking about your next semester. Registration opens Nov. 2.

And while you’re planning ahead, the WSCC Scholarship Application is open through Feb. 1. One application can help determine scholarships for which you may be eligible.

Keep going

A rough week doesn’t have to become a rough semester.

“If this semester hasn’t gone exactly the way you hoped, don’t count yourself out,” said Dr. Angi Smith, vice president for Student Affairs. “There are people at Walters State who want to help you succeed. Ask for help, take the next step and keep going.”
